I anticipate that everyone in the diabetes community is looking forward to the American Diabetes Association’s (ADA’s) 70th Annual Scientific Sessions in Orlando, FL. This preeminent conference on diabetes will be a forum for exciting exchange and debate on a range of topics within the field, including the basic, clinical and translational research that will be presented.
Among the many highlights of this year’s meeting are the final results of the ACCORD (Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes) trial. The story from this study continues to add to our understanding of the relationship between glucose control, microvascular complications and cardiovascular risk. I have no doubt that the implications of this research will continue to evolve over the course of the year, and the highly anticipated ACCORD Symposium on the final day of this year’s meeting will be a starting point for that dialogue.
Other notable presentations and highlights include the annual ADA/The Lancet Symposium that will feature cutting-edge research published in The Lancet’s diabetes issue that coincides with the ADA Scientific Sessions. In addition, Corporate and Continuing Medical Education Symposia on topics ranging from GLP-1 based treatments, to combination therapies, to limiting the risk of hypoglycemia, will be featured at this year’s meeting. Additionally, discussions of diabetes epidemiology, lipid management in diabetes, the role vitamin D plays in type 2 diabetes, and the impact of healthcare reform for those living with diabetes are just a few of the myriad topics that will be covered in Orlando.
As always, we will highlight our national award winners — those that have served the Association’s scientific, clinical and volunteer communities — and we invite you to join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these notable contributors in the fight to stop diabetes.
We hope you can join us for all or part of this year’s program and sample from more than 140 symposia (featuring over 300 nationally and internationally recognized speakers) and over 2,000 individual abstract presentations. We look forward to seeing you there!
