EXENATIDE ONCE WEEKLY
Amylin’s lead development program, managed in collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company and based on technology from Alkermes, Inc., is a once weekly formulation of exenatide.
By delivering improved glycemic control and significant weight loss for patients with type 2 diabetes, exenatide once weekly has the potential to become the first once-weekly product to treat type 2 diabetes.
Recent clinical results have been announced in the following press releases:- Exenatide Once Weekly Provided Superior Glucose Control Compared To Lantus® in Head-to-Head DURATION-3 Study (July 20, 2009)
- Exenatide Once Weekly Provided Sustained Improvements in Glycemic Control with Weight Loss Over Two Years: DURATION-1 Interim Long-Term Data Presented at ADA 2009 (June 7, 2009)
- Exenatide Once Weekly Provided Superior Glucose Control With Weight Loss Compared to Sitagliptin or Pioglitazone in Head-to-Head DURATION-2 Study (March 31, 2009)
- In exenatide once weekly studies, no major or severe hypoglycemia was seen regardless of background therapy. As expected based on prior exenatide twice daily studies, minor hypoglycemia with exenatide once weekly use was limited to subjects using background sulfonylurea therapy. Exenatide once weekly was associated with approximately 30 percent less nausea than exenatide twice daily. Approximately one out of five subjects receiving exenatide once weekly reported treatment-related nausea during the 30-week study. Nausea was predominantly mild and transient.

To learn more about the potential cardiovascular benefits of exenatide treatment, Amylin and Lilly intend to initiate a large cardiovascular study that will evaluate the effects of exenatide once weekly on major cardiovascular events, compared with traditional antidiabetic regimens.
If approved, this would be the first once-weekly therapy for type 2 diabetes and would help patients manage their disease for a full week with just one injection.
